Behind Truth Social: Donald Trump
Summary

Truth Social follows the path of many other politically-oriented social media platforms advocating for free speech. The platform is publicly tied to Donald J. Trump, who launched it as an alternative to mainstream social networks. The stated motivation behind its creation was a reaction against what supporters perceived as ideological bias, deplatforming, or censorship on large social networks. In reality, Truth Social played a key role in his political future.

What prompted the creation of Truth Social

On 8 January 2021, after the Capitol Riot, Donald Trump was permanently banned from Twitter. Facebook and YouTube also suspended him. Losing these platforms removed his primary communication channel, where he previously reached tens of millions of followers.

Following the bans, Trump tried several temporary solutions. For example, his team launched “From the Desk of Donald J. Trump”, a blogging-like page hosted on his website, but it was short-lived because it failed to gain traction.

In early 2021, Trump and his advisers began discussing the creation of a platform he would control entirely, without reliance on tech companies that could restrict him. This led to the formation of Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG).

On 20 October 2021, TMTG publicly announced Truth Social, framing it as a “free speech” platform built in response to “Big Tech censorship.”

Donald Trump's vision

Donald Trump has been the chief public face associated with Truth Social since its inception. For many supporters, having a platform directly tied to Trump gave the site symbolic and political significance. His involvement lent the platform visibility among segments of the public disillusioned with mainstream social media’s moderation policies

The idea resonates with broader trends among “alt-tech” networks and “free-speech” platforms founded by or oriented around public figures who claim mainstream social media silences certain views. Truth Social fits into that ecosystem. To date, it is estimated that 11 million users are on the platform.

Key features of Truth Social

Truth Social resembles conventional social networks in many structural ways: users can post messages, share content, and follow other users. At its core, it presents itself as a social network accessible to a wider audience, though its user base tends to skew toward those sympathetic to Trump’s ideology. Posts on the platforms are called “truths”.

Trump himself constantly posts his “truths” on the platform and engages with his followers, with increasingly notable overnight rampages, producing hundreds of posts per night.

Controversies, challenges and criticism

Truth Social has faced scrutiny and criticism on multiple fronts:

How relevant was Truth Social to the Trump presidency?

Truth Social played a central role in Donald Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign by serving as his primary channel for direct, unfiltered communication with his base. The platform allowed him to bypass traditional media, amplify his messaging, fundraise, and mobilize supporters without external moderation or algorithmic interference.

Trump used Truth Social to dominate news cycles, respond rapidly to events, and reinforce key campaign narratives, particularly around election integrity, immigration, and economic discontent. His frequent and often inflammatory posts kept his base engaged and energized, especially during critical moments like early and election-day voting.

A shift towards fragmented social network platforms

Truth Social reflects a broader shift in how social media, politics, and identity intersect online. As technology evolves and makes it easier to produce and publish social networking platforms, political figures and ideologically driven communities can launch their own networks to bypass mainstream platforms’ moderation, content policies, or commercial constraints.
