The rise of deepfake technology (i.e., AI-generated audio and video that convincingly mimics real people) has created a new frontier in corporate fraud. Among the most damaging uses are CEO or executive voice scams, a type of business email compromise (BEC) in which criminals impersonate company leaders to manipulate employees into transferring money or sensitive information.
What are voice deepfake scams?
Deepfake CEO scams involve AI-generated voices mimicking executives, board members, or trusted colleagues who request urgent payments or confidential data using realistic email, phone, or video requests. Scammers exploit urgency and trust to bypass traditional financial controls.
Unlike traditional phishing, victims hear a voice they recognize, sometimes live, which dramatically increases credibility and likelihood of compliance.
The Singapore scam
In March 2025, a finance director at a multinational firm in Singapore found himself in what seemed like a routine video meeting with senior executives. The screen showed familiar faces, the corporate background, and, crucially, voices that sounded exactly like the company’s CFO and other leaders. What he didn’t know was that none of them were real.
The meeting was a deepfake production, designed to be convincing in every detail. During the call, the “CFO” described an urgent, confidential acquisition that required an immediate $499,000 transfer to a partner account. Trusting the familiar voices and context, the finance director authorized the payment.
Only later, after the real executives learned about the transaction from banking records, did the company realize it had been defrauded. By then, the money had flowed into a web of accounts designed to obscure its trail, and recovery would be difficult.
This incident illustrates how deepfake technology has moved from theory into active exploitation: not just mimicking a voice, but simulating a trusted meeting environment with multiple executives interacting. Its sophistication leaves even seasoned professionals vulnerable, especially when the fraud leverages urgency and internal familiarity.
How the scam works
- Reconnaissance: criminals research target organizations, identifying executives and finance teams. Public speeches, interviews, and social media posts provide voice samples for AI training.
- Deepfake generation: AI voice synthesis tools recreate the CEO’s tone, pitch, and inflection. Some operations include AI-generated video snippets or lip-synced footage for additional credibility.
- The attack: the victim receives a call or voice message that sounds like the CEO, instructing them to transfer funds urgently, share banking details or approve high-value invoices.
- Coverup: transactions are often routed through offshore accounts, cryptocurrency wallets, or money mules. Criminals may monitor responses in real-time, refining prompts to increase believability.
As an emerging trend, criminal groups are offering “voice-as-a-service” marketplaces for fraud, selling pre-trained AI voices of public figures and executives.
Why deepfakes work so well
People are hardwired to trust voices they recognize. Even low-quality AI voices can convince victims when combined with context and insider knowledge.
Fraudsters exploit corporate hierarchies and deadlines to pressure finance teams into rushed action without questioning superiors’ directives.
Traditional training and email filtering can do little to prevent fraud when the attack arrives via realistic audio.
